Reconnecting with our Waterways

New Albany’s history is filled with narratives about river life, and both the local economy and recreation heavily depended on access to waterways. Silver Creek Landing will help connect residents to a scenic part of Silver Creek, providing easy access to one of our most popular waterways.

History of Silver Creek Landing

In late 2016, the City of New Albany announced Silver Creek Landing Phase 1 and 2, improvements that would increase accessibility to Silver Creek along Providence Way for fisherman, kayakers, and other forms of water recreation. This area was once known as Glenview Park, a popular and historic gathering spot nearly 100 years ago. Phase 1, which included additional parking, site improvements, and roadway updates has been completed. Phase 2 of the project includes a stable path from the parking lot to Silver Creek, gathering area improvements, a new trail connection to the Ohio River Greenway, and a new access point and overlook to take in the scenic views and hop on the Silver Creek Blueway.

Protecting Fishing and Improving Kayaking

Recently, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Origin Park have made plans to remove the century old dam along Silver Creek in New Albany, but no studies have been completed on what effects this will have on erosion, water flow speeds and patterns, water depth, possible effects to the New Albany Loop Island Wetlands (which reside just downstream), or effects on current fish and other wildlife in the area.

The current area provides many benefits for local fisherman, including creating pools for local game fish. While the City of New Albany has always supported improving access for Kayaking along Silver Creek, we need to ensure that in doing so, we do not hurt the fishing opportunities currently in place along the creek.

We are currently exploring options that will both improve kayaking opportunities while also protecting the current fishing and boating opportunities available at the site.
