River Rec / Former QRS Recycling
Recycling Old Land for New Use
In 2017, New Albany acquired the former QRS Recycling location on the western side of the New Albany Shoreline. Plans are now underway to transform the massive riverfront location into a River Recreation site, with large areas of greenspace, additional trails, and an updated boat ramp to allow better access to the Ohio River.
Protecting Our Environment
Considering that the site is located on an old recycling center, there were various concerns with respect to cleanup and how to protect the environment for the future. Currently, all of the recycling products have been removed from the site. Additionally, millions of dollars' worth of environmental cleanup are being completed at no cost to taxpayers, making our city healthier and cleaner.
Planning for the Future
Part of the recent 5 Year Parks Master Plan called for re-purposing or eliminating facilities which look to be underutilized or do not fill the needs of the community. The recent Comprehensive Plan also called for phasing out industrial land uses along the shoreline and replacing with recreational land uses. This design serves both the 5 Year Parks Master Plan and the City’s recently updated Comprehensive Plan.
